"With the press of a button, the courier ship 'Hard Bargain' expended more energy in a few nanoseconds than the entire Roman civilization, wrapping the vessel in a negative mass field which instantly accelerated it to many times the speed of light.
Trips between stars now took a matter of days or weeks, depending on the distance, and what was once the fanciful dreams of futurists had become the purview of the mundane.
And somewhere, even then, there was someone dreaming of a way to go even faster..."
