Description

Solandra maxima, also known as Golden Chalice Vine, Cup of Gold or Hawaiian Lily, is a vigorous vine which is endemic to Mexico, Central America and northern South America. It has very large yellow flowers and glossy leaves. I spotted this vine growing next to the road on a garden fence. Ironically it is right near the turn-off to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa. This is a wonderful bloom about 22cm (8 1/2in) in diameter. The pods are easily that long as well. Apparently it has hallucinogenic properties too. Have a great week, Clive

When I saw the picture, I thought the flower was maybe an inch across. !!! That thing is huge! It must be an impressive sight to see. The change in scale (in my mind, at least), made this go from "oh, how lovely," to WOW!!
