Description


The frigate 'Presidente Sarmiento' was built by Laird Brothers, Birkenhead, Liverpool, England. She was launched on 31 August 1897. She is a three-masted frigate which has a displacement of 2,733 tons. She is 85.5m long, has a width of 13.32m, and an average draft of 18-ft. She also has a 1,800 hp steam engine and could reach a speed of 13 knots. From 1897 to 1939 she served as an Argentine training vessel. She participated in the cornation of some kings of England and Spain. During her service as a training vessel she sailed about 1,100,000 miles. Since 1961 she is a floating museum and is anchored in Puerto Madera near the Puente de la Mujer, Buenos Aires. This picture was taken on 26 November 2006. What a beautiful ship! I would never be able to keep all those halyards and sheets straight. It's all I can do to remember the different kinds of lines are halyards and sheets, let alone which ones do what! Fantastic image.
