Description

The city (any city) can hold marvels that often go unnoticed. Yesterday, I had dinner with friends: a semi-regular occurrence, as is listening to the clucking of chickens in their urban coop. The chickens are one marvel contained within the limits of Chicago. Tussock moths are another--they are an interloper species, and their young are beyond vivid. The third wonder of Chicago, discovered yesterday, was the presence of hawks. Big, predatory hawks. They scare chickens...they are a potential chicken hazard, and so Grizelda and her companions are now enjoying more fully roofed-in quarters. Since winter is coming, the coop will be moved...but not yet. So far it's just been hawk-proofed. Other wonders of Chicago lie indoors and often unseen, even if such things are on display, if they are a part of an interior design. My grandmother (and mother) both collected antiques, and so I spent my life around old things: not appreciating them as I do now, and as uninterested (then, as now) as dedicating my life to their care. I will admit to an affection for the smell of furniture polish, but that's as far as my interest in old things really goes. Ah, but I appreciate them, and when I saw a lone magnifying glass, it's metal rim slightly dented from decades of use, I was drawn to it. I'd just enjoyed dinner with friends, with Billy and Jimmy, and Joanne. A little dog named Little Dog was there too. He got plate lickings when dinner was done; he is ancient in dog years and not so young in years of human reckoning. He's a floppy thing. He coughs a lot, and occasionally barks, halfheartedly. So, after dinner, I wandered around Jimmy's apartment, taking pictures of small things. His table runner, the corners of things...a magnifying glass found on a desk as old as anything my grandmother would have owned. I was struck by that magnifying glass, and as the scent of dinner faded (languorously and slowly)from the air, I treated my camera to the wealth of details that are every day life for a friend of mine. This is one such result. As always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting, and hopefully everyone's having a great week.

I think the magnifying glass is really cool. It looks like something of old. Perhaps it belonged to a detective long ago. Perhaps a scientist of some sort. Great shot of your friends magnifying glass.

The table cover has a velvet look to it. Great detailed photo. Antiques remind me of my grandmother's house. She and my grandfather were married in 1910. They had all the National geographics from the teens and twenties...I loved them and still do to this day. As grand as the articles were and pictures...the ads were almost better. Ancient cars advertised when new...skinny little tires on spoked wooden wheels. The roads were so bad, chains were sold to keep a car from skidding off the road when it was muddy. Her father (my great grandfather) had been in the Civil War in the 13th New York Cavalry...her stories of his adventures, his sword and his uniform buttons are responsible for me choosing a career in the Army years ago. Well, enough of this. I leave you with one antique smell...mothballs in the closets!

"I treated my camera to the wealth of details that are every day life for a friend of mine." Wow, Chip, there's something so sweet about that line~~I just love it!! Your foto brings to mind MY grandmother's house and all the memories that I still have about it. Some things just take us back, transport us to times passed.

At first I thought it was wood art, but then I zoomed and saw it was fabric. A very beautiful table cloth indeed.. And it seems you had a cosy time with your friends :-)

What a wordsmith you are! I have an almost identical magnifying glass that I used even more before digital cameras..now a macro pic on the screen reveals even more AND keeps still! And Paisley chenille! Gosh what memories that must have for the owner.

I had to take a second look, just to make sure, it wasn't fractal art, well almost. Paisley patterns seem to have that old world charm about them... like it or not, it's fascinating. great commentry to match this photo. BB

My grandmother's house was old, with highly glossed, dark wooden floors and a smell of polish. I always felt a sense of peace when I walked from the hot south Louisiana sun into its cool, darkened interior. My grandparents were courting in 1916, and also had very old National Geographics. Many a time I sat cross legged on hard wooden floors, totally engrossed in different places and times. Thanks for taking me back to that time. Beautiful image and words. You have a facility of expression that opens windows into your world and sets me to thinking more deeply about my own. Wonderfully done!
