Description

Pulteney Bridge spans the River Avon in Bath, England. It was designed by Robert Adams and completed in 1773. It is only one of four bridges in the world with shops across the full span on both sides. This view is from the south side. This picture was taken in August 1991 and later scanned. What a fascinating image! The bridge and buildings are great, and the steps that are built into the river bed, however they did that, are amazing! Great composition and an engaging shot!

amazing how they also shaped the river and the idea of shops around the bridge is super of course esp.. as it is still standing after more than 200 years

The 'steps' is a weir. Weirs or overflow dams are used to raise the level of water in a river and control the velocity of the flow. Weirs are also used to create mill ponds!

On the River Avon, small excursion boats are used (the tip of one can be seen on the right side) for sightseeing purposes. Without the weir these boats could not operate on the river.

Another place to put on my visit list. I'll bet it looks identical to this today...what's 18 years to such a historic setting?
