Description
In 1853 a cargo ship named the “Carrier Pigeon” became wrecked on the rocks of this windswept promontory giving it the name “Pigeon Point”. Three more ships meet their demise before the lighthouse construction in 1871.
This white brick lighthouse stands 35 meters in height. Point Arena and Pigeon Point Lighthouses are the tallest on the West Coast of the United States. The lens was manufactured by the Henry-LePaute Company Paris, France and was first lit at sunset November 15, 1872. The Coast Guard did automate the lighthouse in 1974.
You are still allowed to self-tour the grounds but unfortunately in December 2001 because of a collapse of the brickwork supporting outside access walkways on the top of the structure the tower has been closed.

Pt. Arena is my favorite lighthouse on the CA coast. I climbed it about 8 years ago and have been back several times just to stand there and watch the ocean. One day I want to stay in one of the guest houses on the point. This is a wonderful, tall lighthouse as well. Excellent shot with all the great out buildings.

Very beautiful and interesting image! Great POV with the thick vegetation in the front. The vegetation seems to be attacking one of the trees that is trying to leap into the safety of the fenced in yard. Excellent capture and info of the lighthouse!
