Description

This is the landscape from the terraced slope of my friend Carla's land. The olive trees are hers, but the vineyards on a lower level belong to her neighbour. The conical hill on the horizon line is the remnanto of a prehistoric volcano. The Euganean Hills were formed in a sub-marine outwelling of basaltic lava during the Eocene, which was followed in the Oligocene by an episode of activity characterized by viscous magma, which formed deposits of trachyte. The area is therefore full of hot springs and spas. Here P. B. Shelley wrote his poem: 'Written among the Euganean Hills, North Italy' (October 1818) Ay, many flowering islands lie/ In the waters of wide Agony:/To such a one this morn was led /My bark, by soft winds piloted./—'Mid the mountains Euganean /I stood listening to the pæan/With which the legion'd rooks did hail/The Sun's uprise majestical: /Gathering round with wings all hoar, /Through the dewy mist they soar /Like gray shades, till the eastern heaven/Bursts; and then—as clouds of even/Fleck'd with fire and azure, lie/In the unfathomable sky— /So their plumes of purple grain /Starr'd with drops of golden rain/Gleam above the sunlight woods,/As in silent multitudes/On the morning's fitful gale/Through the broken mist they sail;/And the vapours cloven and gleaming/Follow down the dark steep streaming,/Till all is bright, and clear, and still/Round the solitary hill. What a gorgeous view! Great incentive to get up in the morning. Vineyards make such beautiful lines in scenery. Love the tree! I'm not surprised Shelly immortalized the area. Wonderful composition and capture!
