Description

PhrankPower and lil sizzler inspire me to post this image. This is of Blanchard Springs near Mountain View, Arkansas, USA. This was taken in the morning a few weeks ago, after a week of heavy rains. A lot of clay-laden muddy water was flowing out of it. If you compare it to lil sizzler's shot you will see that in her more recent image the water level has gone down and is not muddy at all. Blanchard Springs flows out of the lowest level of Blanchard Springs Cavern (there are three levels).

Wow! I've been there many times but never saw the water at this high level. Or this muddy. But I've heard that it can even get rougher than this, almost covering the walkway. Thanks for the post!

I hear they have some pretty nice caverns there. I wonder if some of this water feeds into them.

Wonderful to see! If not for your photo I'd find it hard to believe that so much water can come out of the spring. I think our tour of the caverns took us to the middle layer of the springs...bottom layer must of been flooded when you where there.

This was only my first visit to the area but I snatched a few tidbits of info about the caverns. This spring is in the bottom of a valley or ravine. The water flows OUT of the lowest level of the caverns. There are high bluffs and hills rising up all around here. As rain falls on the higher places in the area it seeps down through the soil and bedrock and some of it ends up in the lower level of the cave and comes out here. Most of the lowest level is only accessible to scuba divers. I only toured the top level, the Dripstone trail, and it is 20-stories below the ground level above it!
