Description
Ascencor Florida is one of thirteen ascencors still in operation in Valparaiso, Chile. They date from the late 19th century. As Valparaiso grew in importance, and the port, the financial and the commercial districts expanded and quickly occupied the city's limited level terrain, residential neighborhoods spread to the nearby hillsides.
As a means to easily access these neighborhoods ascencors came into being. Ascencors are funiculars which have different lengths and gradients.
At the peak of their existence 13 million people used them annually. Today about 3.3 million people still use them.
Ascencor Florida was built in 1906, is 138m long, and has a gradient of 19 degrees, the shallowest of all the existing ascencors.
This picture shows the Business district of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar in the distance.
