Description

Tha house at Coleton Fishacre was built for Rupert D'Oyle Carte and his wife Lady Dorothy Carte (of Gilbert & sulivan fame) in 1925, it was built with the principles of the Arts and Crafts movmentin mind: simplicity of design and quality of craftsmanship but with a beautiful art deco interior. All the stone for the house and garden was quarried from the 26 acre site with a railway built to bring the stone from the quarry to the site of the house. The D'Oyle Cartes used the house as a weekend retreat for sport and relaxation and had many famous guests staying with them.

I looked this place up on the web and, disappointingly, it doesn't show the internal 'art deco' decor. Shame....another one to add to my list of places to visit. I presume you have a National Trust membership with all the historic houses you visit :~) Well captured (shame we rarely get lovely blue skies to set off these beautiful places!)
