Description

A view from the public garden close to my home, with some trees and bushes mostly still in their fall foliage. This public garden is a meeting point for many different people,as I have already said, from students to tourists, from homeless to immigrants looking for their friends to talk about their homes, from pushers to traders of stolen bikes, from young lovers to retired people. Not children, however. And they seem to behave as islands, everybody minding its own business, This is the reason why they usually ignore me and my shooting around. I'm judged a member of the local fauna, and harmless. The origins of the term 'leaf peeping' are not well known, but it is a phrase often used by locals, in a derogatory way, in New Hampshire and Vermont to describe 'out of towners.' Fall foliage tours to the Rocky Mountain states, the northwestern United States and far western Canada are becoming popular as well. The Japanese momijigari tradition of going to visit scenic areas where leaves have turned red in the autumn is similar, though more closely related to hanami (flower viewing). In Finland the time of the year is called ruska (russeting). In Latvia during russeting, leaf peeping is promoted both internationally and locally. Thank you for your kind comments.

lol...part of the local fauna! (I guess you've become part of the animal population! People will smile & leave you alone!) A beautiful picture...the way the colored trees frame the walkers, and the way they sweep around like a huge scarf. Nice too how the colors are backed by greener trees in the background. Very sunny and very intimate (good crop!). And btw, I knew some of those New Englanders who considered outsiders "leaf peepers" (along with some other names). When I was there in the 70s, you still had the old Rock of Gibraltar types who sat on their porches smoking corn cob pipes, measured distance in "looks" ("look as far as you can, go there, and then go another look...") and stared at you without flinching for hours. When you gawked at their leaves, they'd shoot a stare that could start a world war. "Leaves are everywhere," said one old Vermont lady, while raking leaves with derision: "Don't know why you young folk have to come this far to see 'm. I got enough trouble gettin' rid of these things, and you're comin' up here from god-knows-where to jest stare at 'm." (That put a damper on things!) I have to move on now, but I'll be back for the rest. A lovely shot, a lovely series. And I truly didn't know that peeping had become a world wide phenomenon.
