Description

The Snowy Owl is a large, diurnal white Owl that has a rounded head, yellow eyes and black bill. The feet are heavily feathered. A distinctive white Owl, their overall plumage is variably barred or speckled with thin, black, horizontal bars or spots. Females and juveniles are more heavily marked than males As in this shot adult males may be almost pure white, although they have up to three tail bands. Adult females are distinctly barred throughout, and have from four to six tail bands. Immatures are very heavily barred throughout, and dark spotting may codominate or dominate the overall plumage. Intensity of dark spotting varies with the sex of the immatures, females being the darkest. Juveniles are uniformly brown with scattered white tips of down.

Danny, I have missed viewing you images and now am looking more. The Snowy Owl is one I have seen only in photos and this capture of yours is a real beauty. I can see how exposure can be difficult with such a white bird. Yes, this owl must be distinctly apart in some ways from other owls, being diurnal is one and the white coat does seem to fit that. Also, the males being somewhat distinct from the females in spotting and banding is a bit unusual in raptors. Most we see are alike in male and female(the American Kestrel being an exception) with weight being the primary determinant of male or female, besides laying eggs of course. Like the barn owl, the Snowy Owl is quite distinctive and specially beautiful. Thanks for this fine photograph.
