Description
Fort Royal is located on Ile de Sainte- Maguerite, about half a mile off shore from the French Riviera town of Cannes.
Shortly after ownership of the island changed from the Monks of Saint-Honorat to Claude de Lorraine, Duke of Chevreuse in 1612, construction of Fort Royal began.
Toward the end of the 17th century, Fort Royal became home to a barracks and state prison. The Fort was home to a number of famous prisoners until its closure in the 20th century, including the Man in the Iron Mask, Abdel Kadir, Marquis Jouffroy d'Abbans, and Marshal Bazaine, the only successful escapee from the island.
