Good ol' crotchety "Poop-deck Pappy". From what I've read, he was created for the original 'Thimble Theater" newspaper strip once Popeye started to take center stage. Originally, Popeye was far more the irritable curmudgeon. As he became the focus of the strip, creator Segar toned him down to be more likable, but he still wanted a bitter ol' "salt of the sea", so he eventually created Popeye's father and transferred those irascible traits to the older sailor. I assume you employed Michael 4 to get the bulging forearms? Sincerely, Bill

Nope.. no "deep doo-doo" here as long as he has some of Popeye's spinach around... And yes, those early years were much different .. just listen to what Popeye was saying as he mumbled.. Some really hard remarks from an otherwise likable hero to many.. I have a soft place in my heart for Popeye.. He was the first thing I ever drew back in 1955.. I was 4 years old and the praise I got for my Popeye drawings was what started me doing ANY ARTWORK AT ALL... it was my very beginning and without it I probably would not have kept doing it.. Everyone was so impressed that I saw the possibilities of drawing as an "In" with others and my way of getting the much desired attention of others.. for many years he was my favorite cartoon with woody woodpecker a far second.. your picture has taken me back to those times and they were some of the best years of my life as a child.. for that I give you a 5 and my thanks on good memories...
