Description

This is a traditional Navajo Hogan. It is usually round and cone shaped, but now they make them square, with the door facing the east, to welcome the rising sun, for good wealth and fortune. The Hogan is considered sacred to those who practice the Navajo religion and this Hogan was built near the visitor center so we could go inside to see how it was built. The mud roof covers a log style roof for strength and insulation. The traditional Hogan has a hole in the roof to let out smoke and a Navajo rug covers the door. Since this one was built for tourists, it had a stove and you can see the chimney pipe at the top. You can also see that the space between the framework logs, in the walls, is filled with mud and or clay. The conversion from round Hogans, I am told, was because of the availability of wooden railroad cross-ties as the railroads moved towards the west coast. The new style Hogans became hexagonal. Today, while some older Hogans are still used as dwellings and others are maintained for ceremonial purposes, new Hogans are rarely intended as family dwellings. Some info based on National Park Service materials, some from Wikipedia and some from the Navajo people that I met. Scanned from a photo taken in 1996. Thanks for stopping by, taking a peak and for all your previous comments. Dana

Awesome! I would love to have gone into an old one. I meant to thank you for the Navajo greeting in the previous picture. I am signed up to learn Cherokee online but I like knowing words from the other tribes as well. I love when you do these series! Thank you so much! Wonderful capture and info Dana!

this is super. I saw some photos of huts and the inside to be the same as the vikins of Norway. wonder if they had some contact here? I saw many Indains houses by Flagstone to be made of stone and is square shape long before the vikins came to America. just wondering? Of couse too they may have made them round for the world was round too?
