Description

The trans-Andean highway connecting Mendoza, Argentina with Santiago, Chile uses this pass. It is the main connection that all trucks use. This picture was taken at the Chilean entrance to the 3,080m (10,105-ft) long Tunel Cristo Redentor. The elevation here is 3,175m (10,417-ft). The Argentine entrance to the tunneel is at an elevation of 3,500m (11,483-ft). The approach to the tunnel from the Chilean side incorporates about 30 switchbacks and trucks are creeping up and down at a snails pace. This picture was taken on 13 December 2003. Fantastic shot! At that altitude it most be a little hard breathing. I am impressed by the scale of the mountian tops and boulders. The entry to the tunnel most be 20 feet or so, but yet it looks small compaired to it's surroundings. :)

@krog. What looks like the tunnel entrance is actually an old railroad tunnel. The tunnel for the highway to the right of the picture.

Quite an image Sig. What do you think...I'll bet all those boulders have been brought down by ice at some glacial period in the past.

@bmac62 &bazza. The picture was taken from the side of the highway and those are railroad tracks. Yes Bill, I image the boulders were brought down by ice and weathering over the years. It was mild and calm, but it was also summer time. I imagine in the winter time it is a different story.

That's HIGH!! Best I can do for you here is Washington Pass, and we've already been there. (That road is closed for the winter, btw.) This is an amazing shot. I would be gasping for breath at that elevation!
