Description

I need to know what kind of bird this is. I have three bird feeders in the back yard and this bird showed up about a week ago and is eating the birds. When it's around the small birds tend to hide in my holly bush where they feel safe. Is there a way to discourage it from coming around? He is about 8inches tall and very fast. The picture isn't the best, I took it thru the window and screen. Tried to go outside to take it but he flew away. Thanks for the help.

from the posture, clearly not a falcon, looks like a small accipiter (sparrow-hawk). look for pics of Cooper's Hawk and Sharp-shinned Hawk, and see what you think.

My first thought was also falcon but the gray color throws me a bit. Could be a small hawk. Danob would probably know if no one else can guess. Nice shot.

No Idea, but that a cool problem to have. An owl may help.

That's just nature! He'll move on when the hunting drops off, and the smaller birds will carry on as before. My sister had the same problem with three falcons. They took quite a few birds but left after a few weeks, and the small birds returned.

My guess is Red-Shouldered Hawk. Most people take down their feeders for a while till the Hawk moves on.

Hi thanks for the IM This may well be the Roadside Hawk Buteo Magnirostis which resembles a Sparrow Hawk but rather difficult to be precise
