Description

What I really love about sandstone formations is how the elements can carve such unique patterns, shapes and textures into the rock face. The entire shape and style of the structures can change quite radically in just a few metres. As a child, I loved nothing more than carving my initals into the rock's fragile surface! Please zoom for more detail. On top of the high cliffs, Aboriginal middens date back 40,000 years. These middens are the remains of shellfish, bone artifacts and even hearth stones that were used by Aboriginals in the preparation and consumption of their meals.

There are sandstone bluffs at the beach not far from here. Nothing as grand as these, but I know what you mean. They also move all the time, and I don't get too close to the bottom!! Beautiful shot, and I love you can still see evidence of people from so long ago!!

This is gorgeous! Sandstone cliffs are always incredibly fascinating...and yeah, as Marilyn said, just don't get too close to the bottom. They do like to move...generally downward and on top of unwary observers. I love the colors in this, as well as the sense of scale. Amazing! Evidence of ancient people is always an added bonus, something so common here in the not-so-wild wilds of Chicago. Brilliant work!

This is a very interesting series. I always wanted to study geology. Must agree with chipka above...evidence of early human activity just ramps up the fascination with these places.
