Description

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alanya_Castle Alanya Castle (Alanya Kalesi) is a medieval castle in the southern Turkish city of Alanya. Most of the castle was built in the 13th century under the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm following the city's conquest in 1220 by Alaeddin Keykubad I as part of a building campaign that included the Kızıl Kule. This castle was built on the remnants of earlier Byzantine era and Roman era fortifications. The castle is located 250 meters high on a rocky peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean Sea, which protects it from three sides. After the area was pacified under the Ottoman Empire, the castle ceased to be purely defensive, and numerous villas were built inside the walls during the 19th century. Today the building is an open air museum. Access to the seaward castle is ticketed, but much of the area inside the wall, including the landward castle is open to the general public. tfv

The glyphs interest me. Did you get a close up of it by chance?

This is fantastic...I love "old" places and I have had no occasion, yet, to visit Turkey, though I plan to. I'm fascinated by the Ottoman Empire and I happen to love Turkish Classical Music and so it is only natural that I eventually go there! This is a fantastic picture, and I'm taken by the texture of the stonework and the mix of influences here. There's the Muslim calligraphy in the archway, but signs of writing on the support stones to the archway: they look like more modern graffiti, though "more modern" can still be pretty ancient by today's standards. There's also an otherworldly quality to this. Compositionally, the whole image works wonderfully, and I like the guy in dark clothing just wandering through the shot. This is great.

Wonderful image! Such a array of textures and shapes. I'd love to be able to sit invisible somewhere, like in the "Time Machine" and watch time sped up and buildings rise and fall. Excellent!
