I found this background in nasa's space archives a while ago, from what I remember it only had a number attached to it.

That's definitely the Ring Nebula (one of my favorite natural astronomical phenomena.) It's a supernova remnant, if I'm not mistaken. But that's all beside the point: I just read the comments above and decided to add my own two cent's worth. As for this image, I love it. It took me a moment to realize what it actually is...in terms of the shield effect and the unmistakable Enterprise...and that just means that you have to zoom to full view to enjoy what this picture has to offer. This is wonderful work. I like this a lot.
