Description

Mantises are exclusively predatory. Larger species have been known to prey on small lizards, frogs, birds, snakes, and even rodents; they will prey upon any species small enough to successfully capture and devour. Most species of mantis are known to engage in cannibalism. The majority of mantises are ambush predators, waiting for prey to stray too near. The mantis then lashes out at remarkable speed. Some ground and bark species, however, pursue their prey rather quickly. Prey items are caught and held securely with grasping, spiked forelegs. An oldie but goodie :)

One Super pin-up beast you've captured there. What I love about them is, that they will stop and hold still long enough, to have their photo taken...so every pic can be a winner. Check out my Mantis Silhouette (11.6.09), except mine is swaying upside down. Cheers BB

I have many colonies of them in my year and a few egg cases I've put in safe places so the hatchlings will make it through the cold winter. The do make great subjects for photographing and when they cooperate, you can get some very detailed shots of those mulitple-pieced jaws. Very wonderful shot you've done here.
