Description

Guests at Hearst's home had access to a variety of activities. In addition to the lavish meals in the grand dining hall, there was tennis, horse riding, a visit to the zoo and, of course, swimming. Construction for the Neptune Pool spanned the years 1924-1936. Three swimming pools were built on the site, each successively larger. A light-veined Vermont marble was used in decorating the pools and colonnades. The Neptune Pool is 104 feet long, 58 feet wide and 95 feet wide. Its depth ranges from 3.5 feet to 10 feet, and it holds 345,000 gallons of water.

Your image captures so well the lavish yet classical beauty of this pool! Very nice color, detail and composition. I like the position of the decorative pillars in the picture. Lovely ripples on the water too. Great capture also of the hills in the distance. They look very familiar to me. Beautiful Shot!

I should be so uncomfortable viewing this and not being able to swim in it! SO inviting! Great shot, I like that we can see the visitors.

What an ostentatious Greco-Roman display of affluence! Love the grid design in the pool.

Now, that IS a gorgeous pool (just the pool not the surroundings.) I would like to have that very much. Great shot with the mountains in the background. The whole scene really looks very Mediterranean.
