Description

This is the second part of the triptych: it shows scenes of a re-enactment in Codroipo, Friuli, some years ago, where the Emperor of Austria Maximilan was played by the Mayor of Vienna, and many re-nactors impersonating the landsknechts (on the right) came from Austria and Czech Republic. The Venetians soldiers on the left, with the open barbute helmets, were taken last September and belong to a group from Vicenza province. At the heart of the League of Cambrai was the joint committment in 1508 by King Louis XII of France and Maximilian, the Holy Roman Emperor, to divide the territory of Venice between them. The King of Spain joined in because he wanted to take Venetian possessions in southern Italy. The soul of the League of cambrai was Pope Julius II della Rovere, a real soldier called the 'papa terribile'. Machiavelli describes in a very precise manner the various stages of the siege of Padua failed at Codalunga boulevard, in front of the bastion of Gatta (Pussy-cat). Machiavelli found in the events of War of the League of Cambrai factual confirmation of his criticism of mercenary armies but also of his theory on the role of peasants in the formation of an army of national type. Machiavelli described the defenses of Padua not only in a letter, but also in his treatise on the 'Art of War. " The Italian Wars may be divided into three separate wars: the War of the League of Cambrai (1508-10), the War of the Holy League (1510-14), and Francis I's First Italian War (1515-16). The War of the Holy League may be further divided into the Ferrarese War (1510), the War of the Holy League proper (1511-14), an Anglo-Scottish War (1513), and an Anglo-French War (1513-14). The Italian Wars, often referred to as the Great Italian Wars or the Great Wars of Italy and sometimes as the Habsburg-Valois Wars in historical works, were a series of conflicts from 1494 to 1559 that involved, at various times, most of the city-states of Italy, the Papal States, most of the major states of Western Europe (France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, England, and Scotland) as well as the Ottoman Empire. Originally arising from dynastic disputes over the Duchy of Milan and the Kingdom of Naples, the wars rapidly became a general struggle for power and territory among their various participants, and were marked with an increasing degree of alliances, counter-alliances, and regular betrayals. A series of shifting alliances, often brokered by the papacy and ending in inconclusive battles, redraws the map of Italy during the first decades of the 16th century. Between the league of Cambrai (1508) and the treaty of Cambrai (1529), the territories of Milan, Venice, the papal states and Naples grow or shrink, and abruptly suffer changes of allegiance, according to the temporary effects of battles such as Agnadello (1509), Marignano (1515), Pavia (1525) and the sack of Rome by imperial troops in 1527. Among the Italian players in this board game, the Medici are among those who gain - being restored, with Spanish support, to their rule in Florence. Venice, an early loser when alone against all the others in 1508, later recovers most of its territory and retains its independence. The papacy, responsible for the scheming alliances which foster so much of the conflict, appears to receive its just deserts in the sack of Rome in 1527. But it too emerges much strengthened a decade or two later. Once the Catholic Counter-Reformation is under way, Rome and Spain are well equipped to exercise strict control over the entire peninsula apart from republican Venice. Thank you for your kind comments.
