Description

I had asked Natalia about the history of her people and had expected a short, quickly stated listing of the major events in Wallachia. What I got was a woman proud of her ancestral homeland and, as she was pulling out stacks of books and some handwritten scroll, she told me that she had descended from a long line of royalty going all the way back to Vlad Tepes, the Dragon of Wallachia. She told me how her ancient ancestors had lived in a part of this country that had been called Transylvania. To prove her pedigree she took out one such scroll and started to translate it. It was a written account from one of the Orthodox priests and recounted how the villagers in that area had tried to revolt against her ancestor, having determined, by the testimony of many of the old, superstitious sheepherders saying that they had witnessed the old count drinking the blood of virgin girls and the subsequent deaths of these same girls. The gist of the story, and this is where it gets strange, is that on a night, a few days later, these same girls had been found wandering down the road toward the small village and had, upon approaching a coach, had attacked the coachman and the three people riding home from a night of revelry at the local inn. The coachman and two of the riders had been found dead laying next to the overturned coach but one lady had survived to tell a tale of macabre and ghoulish behavior from these girls as they ripped at the throats of the travelers and then feasted on the blood that came gushing from their necks. I could not believe the story she was telling me. It was just to bizarre. I asked to see the scroll but she told me it was in Rumanian which I did not read. She pointed to the lines scribed there saying "this is the true history of my ancestors and, though hard to believe for an outsider, it had happened and so was it written". I tried to remain polite but she could see that I did not believe her.. She said that I should believe what I liked if it made me more comfortable and with a big smile bid me safe journey back to the inn I was staying at. It was then that I notice those strange teeth and saw how sharp the canine teeth were. As I hurried from the old castle all I could think about was how lucky I had been, because I believed that I had just escaped with my life. even worse I had barely escaped with my very soul.

A great story and such a detailled, wonderful render to go with it. I say always check the teeth before you check in at the castle;)

I have not dropped by your gallery for some time but I see that it is truely excellent. You write a mean dialogue and your image compliments and supports it perfectly. On close view one can see those canines. Nicely done, well controlled work and I love how you set up this scene.
