Description

This one started out with a matte painting commission that I did a while back and ended up not being used in the client's production. Multiple photo resources are used in the landscape and both photographic and Vue renders for the sky. Since I already had the base scene setup in Vue, I dropped in a Basilisk and then began building the formations of Epici low-poly soldiers, a few mechs and wheeled tanks. To save on resources I rendered out each group one at a time and and then moved them over for the next render, adjusting to show more movement of the troops and vehicles until getting to the two airborne Basilisk units. With all of these rendered out, I merged them together in Photoshop saving the shadows to a separate layer for easier blending over the original painting. The foreground is a separate Vue scene built using the original scene file to retain accurate camera position and lighting. The final piece was rendered to match the size of the matte painting which came in at just over 12,000px wide. Thanks for looking! :)

That's one heck of a big pic! Stunning job. I've never had a lot of success with the multipass thing, although I suspect it's more a limitation of my 2d editing program, rather than Vue itself.

Very nice to see this insight into the creative process. The foreground scenery is so vivid with the fantasy elements contrasting beautifully against the 'arrival' of the troops. The sky is the icing on the cake. Superb sci-fi!!
