Description
I've been walkin' in my sleep Countin' troubles 'stead of countin' sheep Where the years went I can't say I just turned around and they've gone away I've been siftin' through the layers Of dusty books and faded papers They tell a story I used to know And it was one that happened so long ago...Across the Great Divide, Kate Wolf In 1973 I went to work for the Los Angeles County Public Library at their downtown headquarters. The young Hispanic woman who sat at the desk next to me was Carmen Perez. We had similar tastes in music and soon began going to concerts together. We were never more than just friends. Carmen had her mind set on finding a Catholic husband. After awhile she took me home to meet her family, which consisted of her widowed mother Guadalupe and her younger brother Louie. The three lived on East Hammel Street in Alhambra, East Los Angeles, or East Los as it was known. The house was 450 square feet and had been purchased by Lupe's late husband. I can still remember his picture sitting on a table in their tiny living room. Carmen and her mother lived in the house while Louie had a room in the garage. Lupe kept house and worked part time at the church across the street. Carmen worked with me at the library. Louie was an "artist". While his mother and sister worked he was busy painting and sculpting and playing music with his friends David, Conrad and Cesar. He was friendly enough but I didn't like Louie very much. Louie was married in 1975 and I was asked to "shoot" the wedding. That's Louie and his bride. Carmen is on his left. If you have never been to a Mexican wedding reception or had authentic hand made tamales you simply must have this experience before you die. I tell you, that was some party. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Louie, David, Conrad and Cesar eventually stopped playing their music in the backyard and formed a band. They called themselves Los Lobos del Este de Los Angeles, The Wolves of East Los Angeles. After their first album they dropped everything from the name but Los Lobos. I haven't seen any of them in almost thirty years. I guess fame has different friends.

I put on Nanci Griffith's "Across the Great Divide" to comment. It's a great song. "Where the rivers change direction" A wonderful line for the passage through life. Life changes and sends us in different directions. But it is worth while to take the effort to hang on to old ties. I don't think I've heard anything of "Los Lobos" Carmen looks very pretty. Nice image!

Great story. Funny how life seems to have a mind of its own and travels off into blind alleys. This picture sure is dated by the clothes and hair. Love it!

I find these memories you share with us redolent of MY past too, how weird! The restricted tones in this photo are most attractive, even if they have happened through age.

Great story.. are they still recording? or do you care LOL One of my best friends growing up, and we are still friends to this day, is Mexican, and 10 kids in her family, so I've been to a lot of weddings lol I always loved to hang around their house when her mom was cooking. And you are right about the food at their weddings it is good and there is LOTS of it.. and Catholic wedding ceremonies are very LONG.. lol have a good day!

Hot looking chicks in this shot, Mark. And plenty of hair to share with anyone that needs it.

Great story. I certainly identify with the sentiment in the song. I guess it's true, most people can count real friends on one hand. It does make you stop and think of all the people you used to know and no longer do nor care to. Life is change, grasshopper! Still, it going faster than I imagined. Lovely photo!!
