Description

Poinsettia, a native plant of Mexico, growing in a small area near what is present day Taxco. The Aztecs of central Mexico cultivated the plant and called it Cuetlaxochitl. Because of it's brilliant color, it was a symbol of purity to the Native peoples. When Franciscan priests settled near Taxco in the 17th century, they began to use it in the Fiesta of Santa Pesebre. Juan Balme, a botanist of the same period mentioned it in his writing. He found it flourishing near the hillsides and valleys near Cuernavaca also. In 1825 Joel Roberts Poinsett, first Ambassador to Mexico and a botanist of great ability, visited Taxco and found the flowers growing on nearby hillsides. He had some plants sent to his home in Greenville, Sourth Carolina, where they grew well in his green house. He distributed plants to botanical gardens and to horticultural friends, and it eventually was sold by Robert Buist, a nurseryman, as Euphorbia pulcherrima, Willd. Poinsettia however, remained it's accepted name. It was to be many centuries after the discovery of the plant by Europeans that this beautiful nebula was discovered in deep space, far, far past the grouping of stars that we know as Scorpius. It was immediately named the Poinsettia Nebula not only because of it's stunning appearance, but because it was first seen at the time the ancient Fiesta of Santa Pesebre was observed. This is Bart Doetsch's JuliaN-truchet-BiPolar script found at DA, here: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=Apophysis+resources . Just browse through the pages and you'll eventually find it, grins. It took a little tweaking to arrive at this point. Somday I'll actually write down what I did to acheive the end product, LOL. Hope everyone is okay .. parts of Europe are bitter cold, I hope you are all safe and warm. Parts of the US that don't often have massive snow have been hit with a big storm, I hope all of you are home safe and warm. We missed the storm, it passed to the east of us. Thank you all for the sweet comments, the warm Christmas wishes, and the faves on the previous posting.

A very impressive christmas poinsettia that you found in deep space. They sell little ones of these here at christmas but they never survive the winter. In Perth I used to admire them as they grew higher than the houses and made a great splash of colour.

a simple & beautiful fractal poinsettia, and fun for me because I just got a similar history from a friend who was telling me all about it recently. Great to see it here too! You wrote, "Someday I'll actually write down what I did to acheive the end product, LOL." Oh, please do! Lol! I have noooooo clue what you fractal-ites do! I can understand the pure painting parts, how smudges & blurs & blends & other things are done. But the scripts & molding them into images? I haven't a clue! (I think it's all a hoax frankly, and all of you have this massive quarry of fractal images somewhere in northern Manitoba, and after you all pay dues---which are huuuuge---you go up there and are given a lifetime worth of images which you then post or use however you wish. I have good information on this---it's from reliable sources. One of these days, a 2D artist will discover the quarry, and all of you will have to move to another planet...) (Do I sound like I have too much time on my hands??? I don't, lol! I've just never been able to make a fractal! I tried a script, the software just "did" things, and I got frightened and ran out of the room. And by the way, "Fractalites" comes from the Bible: They were a people in present-day Ethiopia, who worshiped strange gods and left spiral-y things all over the walls. More on that another time...where was I...) Ok! I love how you took a star configuration and painted it into the protrusions of a nebula. And you've articulated your dark space with gentle flares & stars, just enough to show the depth of space, but with plenty of dark space to spare. A simple beautiful holiday image. And as for Cathy's comment on the font (I always read cathy & you, along with certain others: It always opens me up to the works I'm viewing, in addition to being terrific reading): Well it looks like a Renaissance typeface, based on the ornate calligraphies of the time. It has some Medieval 'sculpting' (the angles of the smaller letters), but the "P" really feels Renaissance, because of the lightness of the tracery. (Watch, some Medieval scholar's gonna write to me & say, "study much???" Well, I'll stand by my comment until someone disproves me...) Anyway! The decorative nature of it is perfect for Christmas and for the flower too; and I love your logo, which also has Renaissance proportions; and the lines & letters & numbers have those "notches" in them, imitating old quill-writing. (Nice signature, Rita.) I hope your holidays were wonderful, and that you have a wonderful New Year! I'll be back for more soon! (See? It was only a week between comments! It wasn't 2 decades!) Ok, I'll let you get back to your life now that you've lost 2 weeks...
