Description
Big boring story:
In college 10 million years ago, there were a lot of awful structures around campus made by art students. I'm told they were statues. Or art.
Or something.
Now I'm the first to admit I'm just a hobbiest and not a professional...but stringing some aluminum scrap together doesn't seem very artistic to me. My rule of thumb is, if I can easily reproduce it, it's not art.
At the time I was walking by the theater department on my way to play or something, shaking my head at this awful looking contraption that was supposed to be the next big thing in modern art, and the idea popped into my head that it would be neat just to have some big, carved granite blocks that looked like people struggling to get out.
My demands on art are pretty elementary. I just want some nekkid people emerging from cubes and I'm happy.
That's the long story of how this idea came to be. Decades in the making.
Very exciting story. I know.
Here's what I did for this render since I have no skill in sculpting granite:
The short answer is Metablobs in Vue.
I posed M4 in Poser 7. I imported him into Vue 6 where I set him in the middle of a block.
Where his leg and arm join the main cubical block, I added a few primatives (a cone on the leg, a cylinder on the arm/hand), scaling them down to match as closely as possible the original leg and arm.
Then I "metablobbed" them into the main cube.
Well technically, I didn't. The main cube got rounded by the metablob process, which I didn't want. So I made another smaller cube hidden inside the bigger one and metablobbed everything to that smaller cube.
It's pretty much unnoticable on his leg.
And it didn't turn out how I wanted on his hand, so I did a lot of smudging and blurring in Photoshop afterwards.
I also replicated and scattered a whole mess of cubes in the sky just for something to look at and keep with the theme.
I've experimented with this metablob cube-people idea a few times and never actually sat down with the determination to do it.
My final goal, which I can pretty much promise will never get made because I'm a lazy and petty man, is to have three or four cubes with people pushing and pulling and climbing out.
But, as always, I got lazy and only did one.
Oh, and the barely noticable red eyes were Photoshopped. It looked kind of plain so I gave him red eyes.

Talk about stepping outside the box!!! No, I don't think this is surrealistic art! I think it is more 'cubist'! Oh man, so sorry, I couldn't resist! Now I must finish apologizing for all the liberties I have taken and tell you this is a most super render! Splendid artistry and creativity from all angles!

Fantastic image and wonderful idea! Excellent work! I know what you're saying about the definition of art. Near where I live there is a piece of "art" in the street median that looks like a giant bronze roll of toilet paper on a spindle. I don't know about being artistically inspired whenever I see it but I do have the temptation to go find a rest area. :)
