My Christmas Story
Last year I think I told this same story at Christmas. It’s such a sweet memory, it deserves retelling.
When my son was 5, he had a friend down the street who had some physical handicaps. Every year, the local fire department brought Santa in the fire truck to visit kids with disabilities. In each case, all the neighborhood kids were also invited to come and be part of the fun.
When it was time, we walked down the street, all bundled up against the cold. It was one of those crisp, clear cold nights; the air felt almost magic. Jordan asked if I thought we would see the REAL Santa. I told him no, that this man would be another of Santa’s helpers, that Santa himself had already started his rounds on the other side of the world.
There was a big crowd of kids waiting in front of the house, all chattering and talking and excited. All of a sudden, the siren wailed, red lights flashed, and there he was---Santa (well, his helper, though only Jordan and I knew that!!). There was all kinds of noise, the Ho Ho Ho’s echoing in the night air, children laughing, a couple of them crying---the classic scene!! Santa laughed and came down from the big fire truck. He talked to each child, carefully NOT promising that pony or the REAL car, and handed out candy canes and little gift bags.
After half an hour or so, Santa told the kids he had to be on his way, that there were lots more children waiting for him. He got back in that big red fire truck, and with a blast of the siren, off he went.
Jordan and I started walking back up the street. It was pitch dark; there are no street lights where we live, so the only light was from the houses. We heard an odd noise, and looked up. I thought it was just a plane, but Jordan KNEW it was Santa. It was indeed, some bright light, streaking across the sky. “Mom, mom, look---it’s Santa and his reindeer—look, I know it’s him”!! He was so excited he could hardly talk, nearly climbed up my side to point at what he saw. Now I KNOW Santa isn’t real, but I couldn’t explain that light we saw. There was something up there, probably space junk!! But no matter—Jordan saw Christmas that night. His face was lit with that pure, sweet, innocent, child’s joy.
And that, my friends, is what it is all about.
Merry Christmas to all my wonderful friends.
Peace on earth—and good will to all.

Thanks Marilyn...you've enabled us all to see that light through the eyes of a child. What a wonderful experience for Jordan and you...and now, us!!! Like your tree...I put one up this year for the first time in three years. My 3 1/2 year old grandson is coming this afternoon. His grandpa has to have a Christmas tree...it made me feel good to decorate this year.

Children bring such wonder into the world. In many ways, they're truly magical. Whether or not you saw Santa isn't even the point so much as a child MADE Santa. that's what's so incredibly gorgeous about this story! Okay, it's well written and evocative too! This is wonderful work! I love it!

Ah, but Santa is only not real if you don't believe in magic. I love your story, I think it's really great. Now I am so far behind I'll never catch up and I only have a few minutes on here.

the best, the best, the best, and it's so you too, because you see that light everywhere you go & you know it's real, you know it. I'm leaving only one comment per gallery tonight, because I want to say hi to everyone (I've been absent from almost everyone for a long time), but I chose this piece of yours because it's beautiful, magical, it's very you (and Jordan!) and it's true. True in the deepest sense, where lights really are magic. There're so many uploads to see & celebrate in your gallery, I'll get to many more soon: But for now, dear friend, a deep wish for a wonderful new year, and i hope it has lots of these lights for you, even when the walk home is dark at times for you too. It's been wonderful to share your wonderful friendship this last year. Feliz año nuevo! And many many more to come with lots of light & joy in & out!
