Description
The Frari’s Basilica. The marvellous carved clock by Francesco Pianta (17th Century), made of a single piece of cherry-wood. Detail.
In the enclosed parchment you can read: “The figure on the top is an old winged man with his right foot over a wheel. He has in his hand the plumb line; from his side a serpent is hung and makes a circle.
That man is the image of the time. (…). Under the foot of this figure there is a dictum: WHAT WAS, WAT IS, WHAT WILL BE SURRENDERED, SURRENDERS, WILL SURRENDER TO MY POWER”
