AWESOME ORGAN....AND Stunning shot here...WOWWWWWW Little bit news from our Basilic organ: Built and voiced by Rudolf von Beckerath, the organ was inaugurated by the late André Marshall, organist at St. Eustache church in Paris, on November 13, 1960. This large 32-foot, 78-stop instrument imposes itself as one of the summit of organ building of our times by the majesty of its Plenum, the generosity of its foundations and the magnificence of its Grand-Jeu. Like the building in which it is housed, the organ is impressive in its own right. The case measures 44' wide by 60' high. It has five manuals; the action is entirely mechanical, except for the combination action; and the total number of pipes is 5,811. It is also one of the rare instruments that has a 32' pedal open diapason in the facade. In this respect, it is one of the largest mechanical action organs in the world, with a weight of more than 40 tons. It took two years to build the instrument plus seven months to install it. It was blessed on November 13, 1960 by the Most Rev. Sebastiano Baggio, Apostolic Delegate to Canada and dedicated the instrument to Canadian soldiers killed in action during the two World Wars. Each of the six divisions is enclosed in the case, each having a character of its own. The first manual (Positif) is located behind the organist; the second manual (Grand-Orgue) is in the center of the case with the 16' facade pipes situated between the pedal towers; the third manual (Bombarde) is below the Grand-Orgue and features the 16', 8' and 4' horizontal trumpets. The fourth manual (Récit) is the highest division in the case, with the fifth manual (Écho) located directly above the console. Each keyboard has a compass of 56 notes, with 32 notes on the concave and radiating pedalboard. Two electric blowers feed the two seperate reservoirs (8' x 10'), regulated to provide approximately 2 1/2 inches pressure. The reverberation in the building is seven seconds when empty and four seconds when full. The Positif, Récit and Écho all have seperate tremulants; however, only the fourth and fifth manuals are under expression. The first, third and fourth manuals can be coupled to the second, but the original design allowed for only the Bombarde manual to be coupled to the Pédale. Two modifications have been brought in: the Grand Orgue pedal-coupler designed and installed in 1967 by Pierre-Yves Asselin and, in 1983, Hellmuth Wolff replaced the five original adjustable combinations with an electronic combinator which gives 80 registration possibilities and he also added two combinations for the pedal and a Tutti. Since 1975, Hellmuth Wolff services the instrument. In building this instrument, Beckerath remembers his long French experience (we think of Reims) without giving up the characteric qualitites of his homeland. The wonder is that he has succeeded a stunning symbiosis which lends itself to all sorts of music, the only limitation is coming from the building in which it resides. At the origin of this realization we find Raymond Daveluy who also has the merit of being, one of the first ones in Canada, to take the "good turn", the one that has permited the organ building industry in Quebec to resource itself and to enter rapidly into the way that leads to excellence and success.
