Description

This one is for the car-geeks like myself. Continuing with the rust theme from my previous post, this is the rusty left front corner of a 1957 Pontiac StarChief Custom Catalina Hardtop (they didn't skimp on the names or the steel in high octane 1950s America) that has been moldering behind Neal's and my apartment building for several years now. This car fascinates me. Before I moved into the building, I would stop and stare at it, both before and after I'd visited my friend. Now that I live here, I can stare at it any time I want (and also make endless pictures.) The story of the car--as I understand it--is that it was driven up from Mexico by its original owner about 10 years ago. The old man had intended to do some kind of restoration, but when he died (about 5 years ago) the project was abandoned and the elderly Poncho was left to the elements. It breaks my heart to see such a great, old car slowly rot away, but the price of a frame-off restoration would probably cost more than the end result would be worth. And so it sits, like a fixture of the neighborhood...like a dying old man. This picture was made in the Albany Park area of Chicago on November 29th, 2009. And to everyone who has read this, have a happy new year!

I know about rust--and what it does. I see lots of these kinds of cars here, sitting and rusting away. And yes, it's a shame to see such old beauties simply sit and rot. Happy New Year, Corey!! And a very belated Happy Birthday!!

Yes it's kind of sad how cars can go from a person's pride and joy to complete junk very quickly.

Good shot. Although it breaks your heart to see it like this, the decaying of objects always makes an interesting picture. At least I love that.

Strangely touching. I'm not a car geek of any sort, but I have to say that I love the way this car has been subjectified. Hmmm...is subjectification an actual concept? Well...I like the fact that I can see a car photo as something other than a car as an object. The intimacy of this shot heightens the emotional vibe you're imparting without distracting us with the colder, objective bits. I like what you say and show, itimplies disuse or Christmas toys broken and discarded by the end of summer. Funny how things tend to go that way. This is a great picture...it's deliciously abstract and wonderfully intimate. I can almost feel the rust on the bumper and the dent just above the headlight. Great work. And happy new year to you!

I can't get excited about cars, BUT the pic is superb. A very powerful composition.

I'm sort of "me-h-h" about cars too, but this is really fine work, my dear! You have an amazing eye. I love what you've captured here. I know you're not into series work, but more of this vehicle would be most welcome!

This was from a time when a car was a car...too bad it is abandoned. I like your crop.
