Description

I took this the same night as the other picture of the Alamo in my gallery. I am currently a bit under the weather due to a fiendish foe called mountain cedar. "The ashe juniper (aka, mountain cedar) is a plant that chokes out hardwood trees, is a terrible consumer of water resources, and produces one of the most insidious allergens in Texas. Known as Cedar Fever, the allergic reactions to pollen dropped by male mountain juniper (or cedar) trees is quite stressful. Every year, from December to February, residents and visitors report runny noses, asthma attacks, sinusitis and flu-like symptoms due to pollen. To avoid cedar fever, local allergists suggest staying indoors, sleeping and/or driving with the windows closed, praying for rain to clear the air, using over-the-counter antihistamines and leaving town" ("PLANT COMMUNITIES OF THE EDWARDS PLATEAU OF TEXAS" by David H. Ruskin and David D. Diamond) Unfortunately, leaving town is not a viable option for me. If I could wipe out the lot around San Antonio, I would do so and become an instant heroine to most San Antonions. The above quote came from a website called peopleagainstcedars.com. They are not overly loved around here. It is speculated that over grazing led to their takeover of land that was mostly grassland before. This is fantastic. I'm always amazed at how similar the Czech flag is to the Texas flag. I see the Texas Flag in the background and that's what made me think of the similarities. I love the light/dark byplay here, as well as the details that come out when you zoom. This is a superb and moody shot, full of wonderful, rich, and somewhat brooding atmosphere.

No rest for the weary. Your mountain cedar comments are depressing, and I wish you a complete recovery from this wicked allergen. Anyway, splendid POV, clarity and lighting effects in this shot of the historic edifice, Lucinda. I didn't realize that it was so ornate. I thought it only had unadorned slab walls.

Oh, yes, I remember the sneezes and running nose, weeping eyes all too well. :-) I simply adore the Alamo. I never felt so much a part of history as when I was there. 25 or so years ago, before the addition of guided walks, roped off paths, closely supervised wandering inside, I would pack a sandwich and soda in my oversized purse, catch the bus and visit the mission. Three or four days a week found me there. I'd slowly walk through the inside, stopping to look at every stone, each corner... and always end up in the courtyard in the back on a bench. There were not the crowds I saw when I was there a couple years ago. It was normally quiet, no more than a dozen people at any time. I'd watch the history movie while eating and then just listen to the sounds of the city the traveled over the walls and through the trees. This is a stunning shot of the night beauty of the mission walls. Love it!

A beautiful mellow view of this lovely building, a great capture. Sorry to hear you have that allergy. A lot of people down here get it from the pine trees that grow everywhere but I am glad it doesn't affect me at all.

I have enjoyed this series. Loved the area when I was there, I remember an older hotel that was I believe across the street from the Alamo, if was a beautiful and historic place. Was wondering if you visited that or happened to get any photos of it... Hope you are feeling better soon.
