Description

I have a friend who shoots seriously tall buildings from the bottom up. I shoot them from the top down. This is living proof that what you see depends on where you stand. Yes, a miniscule part of Chicago as seen from the 99th floor of the Sears/Willis Tower. Bill:) "Power" thumb_1999257.jpg

What a view. I refuse to call that the Wilis Tower...maybe I'm just a stick in the mud! Oh well...that doesn't change the fact that this is an amazing photograph and the waterfall shape of the Citibank building is perfect as an anchor in this image. How did you capture THAT shade of blue...that's what color it is, but I guess you have to be up high enough to get it because otherwise you just get reflections from the buildings around it. I love this shot. That part of the city looks so much cleaner from your POV. Great work!

To me, what distinguishes your many views from this platform is, first, the clarity of your images, even as the buildings plunge downwards; second, the innate sense of how the buildings interact--their separate boxiness interacting, their separate sheerness (glass/steel) interacting; and their separate juttings into space. Your composition--ie, how you line up rooftops with ground-level grids--and how the bldgs' line up with each other. And the color play, such as the dark steel & beige stone etc. The most defining thing in this may be the looming descent of the front towers--as you say, caught from the top rather than looking up, so it reverses our usual perceptions. Another fine top-floor capture of my hometown's "downtown" district; each one looks totally new to me. And the right angle to set it all off. (Ie, the "correct" angle, I don't mean a "right angle" mathematically.) (And btw, since you asked, some weeks I'm up late to meditate; and I could ask you what you were doing up too! Though I see now that you've retired. Pretty lonely in the gallery right now. I could steal a few refreshments, take some magazines...well, if you had a few magazines. People come over, you should put out snacks! And leave on a light or two...) Another in this wonderful series.

Truly FASCINATING! and for so many reasons.. 1. I shall never go there myself. 2. If I did I'm not certain I could look out so high up. 3. It demonstrates very well how architects play god, playing with their models but not necessarily ever having to actually live or attempt to breath in those sunless, dismal, diesel infected canyons. 4. It actually looks quite attractive from up there!! Great pic!

The buildings stand so tall and so close to one another. A forest of concrete, glass and steel. Stunning view and great shot.

This is one of many places I didn't set to--but wow, what a shot--nearly gives me vertigo just looking at it. There are as many perspectives as there are people with cameras and this just proves it!!

TERRIFIC SHOT AND POV!!!!! NOW YOUR MUSING GAVE ME FOOD FOT THOUGHT: IN FACT, WHILE ONE CAN ENCOUNTER UNSAVORY WASTE ON THE SURFACE (OF WATER, FOR EXAMPLE), AND THEREFORE FROM A TOP-DOWN POV, WHAT MAY COME OUT OF THE UNEXPLORED DEPTHS, THAT IS FROM A DAWN-TOP POV, SCARIES ME WITLESS.....;-D
