Description

This charismatic pair of Otters, equally at home in the water and on land, is the smallest of the world’s otters. As well as its size, the Asian short-clawed otter can be distinguished from other otters by its small claws, after which it is named. These tiny claws, that do not protrude beyond the ends of the fingers, enhance the manual dexterity of this otter as it handles prey. Nor does it have the full webbed feet of other otters, which you may be able to make out, along with the small claws. The Asian short-clawed otter typically has brown fur with a paler underside, although cream-coloured individuals have also been known. I have photographed these as part of a fragile earth series that was used for conservation, and thus quite dear to my heart. And proud of the fact quite a few of this series have been widely published.
