Description

Even androids need some time off... First image of 2010. So far, so so. First, my car packed in and needs a new engine. Then my glasses broke, and I've been stumbling in the general direction of nothing in particular, unable to read for more than a few seconds at a time. Then the weather got furiously hot (OK, that's good - apologies to everyone freezing in the northern hemisphere) and I got yet another summer lurgy which laid me low for a couple of days (not good), so all I could do was watch a classic game of cricket (excellent - although my team didn't win, after five intense day's play - but then we didn't lose either.... Don't worry, you have to grow up with the game to really understand). Then I had this weird dream... (but that's best left for another time...) Anyway, I've also had some time off, and even though I couldn't join the androids in Greece, I was there in spirit. And like them, I'll be back at work on Monday, trying to save the universe from the invading hordes.... In the meantime, I'm off to take my medication :o) Vue 8 Infinite, signature in Photoshop CS3. What a cool scene. This reminds me of some of the more contemporary android fiction that I've been reading recently--it seems that Science Fiction is growing out of technophobia (finally) and machine cultures aren't necessarily anti-human. That's a good thing...I'm sick and tired of malevolent Terminator-type machine intelligences wiping humanity out...it's much better to see something a wee bit more realistic. This scene reminds me of a story I read in which artificial intelligences were mimicking human beings to the point of...well...taking vacations and pretending to get drunk, and a number of robots were running around in human drag starting bar fights (as they thought such things were a human sport.) It was a great story and this really brings that home for me, for reasons I can't really explain. This is great work, and well...I REALLY have to catch up with your gallery!

well craig, as you can see I am away for a while, then when I come back, it takes me several days to get to everyone (I go in no particular order, I just jump around & often I save the longer comments for last, where you're included btw); and your always wonderful comments make me feel a bit of a heel for not being here more often. (I know, there's no pressure from you, but I still feel it since you are so generous when you view.) So I start with your 1st of the year image; and after staring at it full view, I'm back in your wonderful world of artistic precision, subtle inner vision, beauty and gentle humor. One really has to look at this: Your androids really are in Greece! Either that or they're somewhere near a Greek Orthodox church...The piece has very intelligent design: The texture of the walls & stone fences is repeated in the table tops (give my regards to the designer, lol), and even a little in the umbrellas, in the white portions at least. Your light feels true, as it's a late day light spreading that strange saturated yellow-oranges over everything. I love the light through the liquor bottle. And the droids are foils to those tones, in their chrome-like whites, silvers, blacks, etc. Most of it is under shadow, true to late day; and the church seems so clean & bleached, as structures in the mediterranean often are. And you left some of the bell-area flush against the sky so we can see the sky come through it (nice touch). There also seems to be a light source coming from the other side (you sly devil!) and a droid dog or cat! (No droid mouse or bone, lol?) And the sky is quite dramatic, going from intense yellow at the horizon to peach & grayish hues further away. The clouds & light are very well done...A serious render with sly humor & wonderful eye games; and I can't get over that these droids are right next to an Orthodox Church! A witty & subtle juxtaposition, and a fine beginning for the year, which I hope went well for you. Now as we in the arctic (ie chicago) move out of ice and snow, you're slowly moving out of blistering heat, I presume. I hope the fall augurs beautifully for you. Wonderful render & subtly clever too.
