Description

Henry Yesler was one of Seattle’s founding fathers and its first business tycoon. His home sat at the corner of First and James streets. After the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, which destroyed most of the downtown area of the city, including his home, Yesler began the construction of the Pioneer Building, which was completed in 1891. It is a mix of Victorian and Romanesque Revival architectural styles. Over the years it has served in many capacities. During Prohibition it housed Seattle’s first speakeasy. It was saved from the wrecking ball when it was included in the Pioneer Square Registry of Historical Places. Yesler’s steam-powered saw mill sat across from his home, right on Elliott Bay, at the foot of what is now known as Yesler Way and was then known as Mill Road or the ‘Skid Road,’ for the way the logs ‘skidded’ down the steep grade from the timber line to the mill. In time, ‘Skid Road’ was altered to ‘Skid Row’ and so Seattle is responsible for this term.

Very interesting building! I like the mixtures of styles. Mind you, I have no idea where one starts and the other ends, but I like the combination. Though I'm not so crazy about the globby pillars that are prominent in the front. Beautiful reflections of the trees. Great history! I didn't know Seattle had a great fire or about skid row. Excellent capture and info!

Strong influence of the Chicago school, "Rookery" building, f. ex. Like that one, I suppose it is an iron frame building, with non structural stone facing.

Wonderful architecture and history. Your POV is just great! I'm glad the wrecking ball missed it. A city's character is built on such great architecture. Really great shot!

I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying my city through your eyes! I hope you got loads of pictures down there. You know, I have somewhere around one, maybe two, shots of Seattle. How many of Chicago? LOL! Maybe I should just run down to Seattle one day with my camera. Now why doesn't that every occur to me? Fantastic shot of the old Pioneer Building. The light is excellent!
