Description

A small crew of an independent asteroid prospector found themselves on the front line in the early days of the conflict now referred to as "Humanity's First Interstellar War". Based on the European Space Agency's station usually called "Haven-1" (which easily translated to any of the several languages of the member nations) orbited the star Lalande 21185. This was both a jumping-off point to several other stars, and also had the advantage of a double-ring of asteroids, and a fairly high level of heavier elements like iron that were essential to the development and expansion of explored space. The Divum Moenia (or Sky Castle - the captain felt a rough Latin version sounded a bit more impressive) plied the belt rather successfully, and was eager to set out once again. Her captain had the wisdom (or paranoia, as perceived by other members of the crew) to anticipate the growing hostilities within human space, and modified his ship with weaponry: the 4 guns are two railguns (magnetic linear accelerators) and a pair of heavy lasers. These could easily be justified to the authorities as tools for their prospecting operations. The 4 missiles were referred to as "remote probes" on the ship's manifest. Wars are often seen by historians and news medias as remote strategies and the movement of pieces on a board. But the reality for its participants is very personal, often numbingly dull and yet more terrifying than the rest of us hope to ever experience. These men learned this the hard way. -------------- I've been wanting to do another series set during the war, and I'm hoping that now that my new computer is here I can do so and still work on other projects as well. The model was made in Bryce 6, textures are mostly my own, but a few presets are used as well. Background was done in Photoshop cs3. Compositing and post work all done in Photoshop as well.

I believe I like this model the best of any of your rocketship models. Like the writing, too.

Excellent looking ship! Mining equipment, yeah officer, that's what it is, just some tings to break up rocks... Of course, anything moving fast in space is a weapon. I like the little story.

Wonderful work, as always! I like the fact that the ESA has sort of superceded NASA, but NASA is retiring the space shuttles which were--at best--nearly useless anyway. I mean, low orbital shuttles aren't equipped to do the sorts of cool things that require a high orbit...so what if they're reusable! Anyway...I'm rambling and to be honest I think as little about the ESA as I do NASA...both organizations need real visionaries and not bean counters...oh well...there's always Russia: never mind the fact that Russia lost one of its early attempts at a sail-powered spacecraft. It blew up... Okay, needless to say, your series here has inspired a number of thoughts and I've always been curious about this interstellar war that keeps popping up in your work. It's like the Butlerian Jihad in Frank Herbert's Dune novels...you never get more than snippets and pieces of the story, but the whole thing remains mysterious though ever present, even after it's end. I like that sense of continued tension and you manage it perfectly here. Great stuff, and as always, I look forward to more!

I'm with Chipka - your images and snippets of background info always serve to set my mind wandering through your galaxy, even if I sometimes miss the transport shuttle... Excellent work!

Once again fantastic modeling done inside Bryce! Who needs a separate modeling program? It really seems as if the craft is moving through space.
