Both versions have their points. this POV makes me feel as if I'm in a tree spying on someone the previous like I was on my belly! both are good for various reasons, I guess it's more what mood you're trying to create

She often came to the gate on those days out walking the dog. She would pause and stare in, wondering to herself what it would be like to live inside the asylum with all the crazy folks. It seems like the crazy people get to have all the fun! If only they'd let her in, she could be crazy too! :O)

Es wird immer besser... vor allem der Blickpunkt ist sehr schön gewählt, eine kleine Frage stellt sich mir: Liegt das Gebäude wirklich so viel tiefer als das Tor, wenn nicht ist das Tor im Verhältnis etwas gross... war nur das, was mir so auffiel...lächel
