La matière ainsi purifiée est nommée œuf philosophique. Voici la recette, très simplifiée, telle que l'explique Nicolas Flamel (1330-1418) : - L’œuvre au noir, qui débarrasse la matière de ses impuretés (symbolise la mort) - L’œuvre au blanc, ou petit-œuvre ou petit-magistère, qui permet de fabriquer la Pierre Blanche capable de transmuter les métaux en argent. L’opération est symbolisée par un arbre portant des lunes.
