Description
The John Cable Grist Mill, constructed in 1868. This is one of 70 historic structures in Cades Cove which is a part of the Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee
In Cades Cove there were few sources of power which the frontiersman knew how to harness. One of those power sources was the water wheel such as drove the early grist mills. Cable Mill is one of those. When John Cable built his mill at the west end of Cades Cove, it was surrounded only by his fields. Like most farmers with gristmills, Cable's milling was a part-time job. Although the mill was open for business on specific days, customers who came at other times could ring a large bell near the mill when they wanted to call John Cable from his fields.
The Smoky Mountains Natural History Association keeps Cable Mill running in Cades Cove to teach the Smoky Mountain visitor a little about life in the 1800's. The mill is still operated April-October.

A fantastic photo! I have seen all the other structures in Cades Cove, but I never took the time to walk over to this one. Now that I know what I missed, I'll have to put that on my to do list.
