Description

Thought I would explain the design elements around my latest creation. Of course the goal is to find a habitable UNOCCUPIED planet or "M Class" as they used to call them on 'Star Trek' so I decided to name them M-Class Station Ships. The Station ship has three sections: 1. A Core component with living and scientific facilities. 2. A Framework section which provides connection, docking, storage, and expansion to the Core. 3. A Drive System / Tug which delivers the Core and Framework to the planet, assembles the pieces like an Erector set, then is remotely returned to the Launch Point for use on another delivery. Depending on the type of planetary bodies found orbiting a star, there are (currently) three platforms that can be delivered on-site: 1. System 2. Planetary 3. Lunar If a star contains multiple planets, including one or more M-class planets and multiple moons, a System Station ship will be sent to provide adequate infrastructure for multiple, simultaneous exploration events. If a system contains gas giants with moons capable of supporting life, a Planetary Station Ship will be sent. If a system contains smaller non-habitable planets but potential resources such as ores and other consumables, a Lunar Station Ship will be sent. Cores created in Inspire 3D Modeler by me; Frameworks are a combo of I3D and DOGA L3 parts (I got lazy after creating the Cores). Most of the textures are Freebies from the NewTek (Lightwave) web site, but the rest are mine. T4V&C

It's always nice to see a well thought-out design. What I like most is that the design of the ships is so original that I can't even tell if anything else I've ever seen influenced them. So do these just work as scientific exploration management, or do they play a role in terraforming as well? Also, what happens once a system is fully explored and settled? Are they moved to a new system or left behind as part of the new colony's space infrastructure?

Thanks! Answer 1. My vision is that they are multi-role mission, which is why I added the Framework system to the design. Gives maximum flexibility depending how the need evolves. You can connect more Framework and Core systems as well as keep the Drive System / Tug on-site if you need to push stuff around. Answer 2. You can do both. In the case of a mineral operation, for example, you would probably want to pull up stakes and move on to the next prospecting site. So you disconnect the framework from the "leg configuration" and reattach in the "thrust configuration" using a Drive System / Tug and push on to the next dig. If you are looking to leave a presence in-system, you have a port of call in place orbiting the planet. I should have more configurations completed in the next couple of days that I can post (depending on the job search; I do have a phone interview with Real Networks in Seattle tomorrow) Thanks again!
