Description
The Allgaeu Alps near Fuessen in Bavaria.
This picture was taken on 3 January 2010 while on my way from Oberammergau to Stuttgart. Temperature was about -10C, the road was salted but the surface was icy at times. The time it takes normally to drive from Munich to Stuttgart is about 2.5 to 3 hrs. It took me 6 hours. Stop and go traffic on the Autobahn (A7) to Ulm and on the A8 between Ulm and Stuttgart. Two lanes in each direction except the last 30km or so near Stuttgart. On the 3rd of January most people returned from their holiday vacations and/or ski trips and traffic was heavy. While caught up in the stop and go traffic, traffic reports reported various conditions around Southern Germany. The longest Stauungen (stop and go) were near Nuernberg- 100km, ~ 60 miles. Many other locations had similar traffic jams, hence the 6 hr. drive.
