Description
Got Poser 8 today and loaded it up. Thought I'd do a comparison between Poser 7 and Poser 8 right out of the box.
Now admittedly I haven't fiddled with Poser 8 for more than just a few hours at this point, and there's all sorts of tweaking that I need to learn about the new intricate lighting. Lighting is the big improvement, in my book.
Particularly light attenuation (fall-off). This render shows how it's handled in Poser 8 and how it's not handled at all in Poser 7.
There's only one point light. Both renders are of the exact same scene, one in Poser 8 and one in Poser 7. The only thing that was changed between them is that the Poser 8 version had some light options enabled in the render settings that aren't available in Poser 7. No other lights were added or taken away.
The Poser 8 render on the left is a bit washed out, and from what I gather that's an easy problem to make happen if you don't know what you're doing yet. Obviously I need to work some more.
Still, it's a pretty big difference in the way things are handled between the two.
The final Poser 8 render (which took forever to render out) looks more like what the preview window shows at any given time. And though Poser 8 has some nifty OpenGL stuff to make that happen anyway, I didn't have it turned on and it still ends up looking more like what you expect. So that's a plus.
Anyone else make their first render in Poser 8 with all the fancy lights turned on and then freak out when the red dots started showing up? Took me a little while to realize what the deal was with that. (It was pre-calculating the ray traces and what not - it's normal and goes away when it does the final pass). I flipped out. Figured my old computer just couldn't hack it.
It's going to take some getting used to.

the red dots are only when IDL is enabled. But, yes, Poser 8's lights are a helleva lot better, and I have been using the "inverse square falloff" option on point lights for some nice effects. A lot of new learning, or re-learning of Poser lights with all of the new options. Plus there are some new python scripts in P8 -- one is lighting control, the other Dimension3D's render options. Have fun playing with your new toy. Can't wait to see some Poser 8 renders from you.

It took me two years of fiddling to get where I am with Poser 7. I hope it doesn't take another two years for Poser 8. That IDL red light thing really messed me up. I didn't let it finish. I kept stopping it and tweaking with settings to see if I could fix it. Finally I walked away and let it go. That's when I realized that it's part of the normal process and will render out fine if you just stop fiddling with it and let it do its thing.
