Description
Hi - Yes, it's another 'Empire Strikes Back' inspired piece. This started out as another 'speed render.' Well, the city part anyways.
I modeled the Cloud City in Modo in about an hour and textured it in Vue. Most of the modeling time was spent creating the building greeblies on the top.
Once I had a result I really liked, I added a couple of the 'Probe Pod' ships from my last render in with a quickie wing made from a cylinder primative. Came together quite nicely.
Then we hit the clouds. Another two or three hours tweaking on low quality and moving things around brought an atmosphere that looked pretty cool in the test renders.
Final render with global ambience atmosphere and atmosphere quality at '0' with soft anti-aliasing to smudge out the noise was 57 hours at 1920x720 pixels. Fortunately I have a machine I can just dedicate to that kind of thing... so it sat there just chuggin' along for the last two plus days.
Postwork included some overall levels adjustments and enhancing the flares from the engine with some pre-rendered glows from the Mood Master expansion package. I also tweaked some of the colors a bit to bring out more blues in the pod ship.
This one was a lot of fun... except for the waiting on a result part. That kind of sucked :)

After seeing "Something, something, something Dark Side" I can't look at a twin-pod anything without giggling... Great light n' cloudscape, though :)

very nice work on the city. the light and the clouds are lovely together. the color in the clouds is just perfect. i would have expected a little more rounded clumping and a little less standard fractal noise, but that's a very small issue that doesn't really affect the overall impression the image makes.
