Description

Dinosaurs gather by a water hole but the sky tells a different story. An asteroid has hit the earth although the shock wave has not yet had effect. ************************************* Since life began on Earth, several major mass extinctions have significantly exceeded the background extinction rate. The most recent, the Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event, occurred 65 million years ago. It marks the extinction of nearly all dinosaur species, which were the dominant animal class of the period. Scientists theorize that the K–T extinctions were caused by one or more catastrophic events, such as massive asteroid impacts (like the Chicxulub impact), or increased volcanic activity. The Chicxulub impactor's estimated size was about 10 km (6 mi) in diameter and is estimated to have released energy 2 million times more powerful than the largest hydrogen bomb. Thanks - well done image. I like the contrast you've made to tell the story. Not only a seismic event but an earth crust shifting event, with inertia causing the oceans to fly up over great land masses and, like a giant bulldozer, sweep everything into the ocean basins. Check out the book "T. Rex and the Crater of Doom" by professor Walter Alvarez of Univ. of California, Berkeley (ISBN: 0-375-70210-5, Random House, 1998). :-)
