Description

The Old Spanish Trail began construction in 1915, and was an interstate route that eventually spanned from San Diego, California to Jacksonville, Florida. Many sections of the road were indeed old trails the Spanish explorers had utilized which were originally created by the ancient Native Americans. But a lot of it was just connecting the dots of various old trails and dirt roads, many of the origins unknown. Also, many sections were totally new, but the 1915 project was an ambitious one, and a first of its kind for the lower continental United States. The Old Spanish Trail was later replaced by Highway 90, which remains to this day. However Highway 90 is now mostly local traffic as the newer Interstate 10 parallels the same San Diego/Jacksonville route. Vast sections of Highway 90 were paved right on top of the Old Spanish Trail, and in many sections where highway 90 veered off on a different path the Old Spanish Trail was literally ripped up and the sturdy bricks reused. This is one of the few remaining sections of The Old Spanish Trail, and was opened with much fanfare in 1921. It's a five mile stretch located just east of Milton, Florida (my old home town). Although marked as a two-lane road, both lanes together would have trouble accommodating just one of toady's SUV's. This preserved, unused section runs parallel to Highway 90, just a few yards off to the left, and it ends when highway 90 overrides it. Some sections in East Milton still utilize the Old Spanish Trail in residential neighborhoods. You just have to be careful when an auto approaches from the opposite direction! Thanks for reading! marshall

The Old Spanish Trail is also a familiar name in Houston where it has been paved over but is still recognized as part of the original trail. Nice to see another part of it.

Wow, a very interesting bit of history. I hope they perserve it. Great shot... I've always loved the old cobble stone-like roads.
