Description
3rd Feb.is "SETSU-BUN" in this year.
"SETSU-BUN" is changing point of the winter between the spring in Japan.
On this day, the bean-scattering ceremony is practiced in each place.
We throw a bean towards the outdoors while shouting that "ONI WA SOTO!"("Evil is Out!"). then toward the indoor while shouting that "FUKU WA UCHI!"("Fortune is In!").
Men of the family put on the mask of "ONI" (ogre) and disguise himself as an "ONI" and can threaten a family. The family in the house throws a bean towards the "ONI". "ONI" complain of pain and disperse. then We eat the bean.It is said that we should eat the bean of the number same as age
And We( live in west japan ) eat a whole "MAKI-SUSHI"(on the table this picture) towards lucky direction in this year.
the lucky direction in this year is West-South-West.
I wish you try it; if do so it, a surely good thing occurs!:)
Thank you for viewing!

This is just so great Fujiko! The posing is dynamic and she radiates pure joy in carrying out her role in the ritual. Your "brother" too is really playing up his part. And yet you can still detect a family bond by her pose - she has a defensive leg stance but her eyes are closed and she is smiling... she trusts this man. And the fact that the kitty is still there tells us this is a familiar if crazy game played by the humans but nothing to fear. It is interesting that the women get to be the ones to cast out the evil. And that it is a alpha male who gets to play the part of the demon. This is a role reversal of traditional gender power that plays out in so many rituals in so many cultures. In western Wiccan tradition 2 February is called Candlemass. It occurs after the winter solstace we celebrate it as a time when light is clearly coming back to the world. The crop god is beginning to stir but is not yet awake. Surely the dates are not a coincidence... although your's varies with the year and that is fascinating in itself. Thank you for sharing this delightful insight into traditional Japanese culture. Your work is a delightful presence here. Oh and that is such a good rhyming joke... lover/brother :-)

Is an Ogre the same as an Oni as your brother's mask looks like a classic Oni. Excellent tradition and cultural insight. I will have to try this! (could used some good fortune!)

Throwing beans at brother or sisters is old tradition among some families. When I was little, it'd happen at our house every night! LOLOLOLOL Pretty cute stuff. Very good!
