i think most people would have chosen the light to center on the angel rather than the other figures. i think it was an inspired choice to make the angel the darkest element. it gives it weight and authority, fitting the announcement of a proclamation. it also makes the bowed animals seem as if they're lit by the angel itself. very cool use of natural lighting.
