Description

Excerpt from Wiki : "The British canal system of water transport played a vital role in the United Kingdom's Industrial Revolution at a time when roads were only just emerging from the medieval mud and long trains of pack horses were the only means of "mass" transit by road of raw materials and finished products (it was no accident that amongst the first canal promoters were the pottery manufacturers of Staffordshire). The UK was the first country to acquire a nationwide canal network The 20th century brought competition from road-haulage, and only the strongest canals survived until the Second World War. After the war decline of trade on all remaining canals was rapid, and by the mid 1960s only a token traffic was left, even on the widest and most industrial waterways. In the 1960s the infant canal leisure industry was only just sufficient to prevent the closure of the still-open canals, but then the pressure to maintain canals for leisure purposes increased. From the 1970s onwards, increasing numbers of closed canals were restored by enthusiast volunteers, and this continues today" -------------------------------- Thanks to Armitage Shanks and Mr. Spode's residence in the neighbouring village, the Trent & Mersey Canal runs near to us. Lovely place to walk the dog (when we're not up on Cannock Chase) Rendered 4 times till I was happy with this. I like the final result though :) Thanx 4 peekin'

Hehe, Spode china! My uncle went on a canal tour in the UK and the normally sourpuss man loved every minute of it..and I can see why, if it was as lovely as this!

Sadly, most of our canal heritage in the States IS history; although there are sections of the most historic ones still being maintained as national historic landmarks.

Great image! Did you know that there are actually more narrow boats on the canal system now than at the height of the Industrial Revolution!!! :-)

This is lovely. I like the canal and the way your terrain is formed. Wonderful textures, too!

The path is brilliant, the vegetation too. The canal I find a bit too similar as the surrounding, a bit hard to see for my old eyes. Maybe a naked V4 would help!? :-))))

Oh my god, you live in the UK? I absolutely adore this country, for its beautiful countryside, its language, mentality and heartwarming people. I envy you :-) Oh yes, the image is fantastic, by the way ;-). I really like the lighting in this one, and although it is a dry scene it remindes me of the lush green after a heavy rain. Beautiful.
